DSE Assessments

The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations aim to protect the health of people who work with DSE or VDUs (visual display units, such as computer screens).

Computer workstations or equipment are sometimes associated with upper limb disorders (ULDs), which include pains in the neck, arms, elbows, wrists, hands and fingers. These are often referred to as repetitive strain injuries (RSI). Other health problems linked to VDU work are back ache, fatigue, temporary eyestrain (not eye damage) and headaches.

These problems can be avoided by following good practice.

The Regulations came into force on 1 January 1993 (with some minor changes in 2002). They put into UK law a European Community Directive aiming to protect the health of workers by reducing risks from VDU usage.

The Regulations require employers to:

  • evaluate workstations to assess and reduce risks
  • ascertain that workstations meet specified minimum requirements
  • arrange work activities to include breaks or changes of activity
  • supply eye and eyesight tests on request and special spectacles if required
  • supply information and training

A copy of the DSE Regulations 2002 are downloadable from here

If your workplace doesn't already comply, you should take action.
